NEW ROLES!!!.... Ok, I can finally let the cat out of the bag.......I am voicing Kamina on the new Bandai dub of "Gurren Lagann". I am not only super psyched to be playing such an awesome and beloved lead character, I'm super duper psyched that it will be airing on Sci-Fi Channel in just a few weeks!
Its a bit of a bittersweet situation, in that I do feel bad for the dub cast at ADV (many of whom I know personally) who had already recorded an entire volume of the show. ADV lost the rights for whatever reason and Bandai snapped it up and decided to start the dub from scratch with an LA cast. To have a role yanked from you as an actor sucks royally, and I sincerely hope it doesn't create any animosity. The Houston crew are phenomenally talented and I wish them continued success with future projects.
I just got back from a signing at Anime Expo for another Bandai show that I'm attached to. Its a samurai-era story called "Ghost Slayers Ayashi". I am playing Hozaburo, who leads a small band of warriors in protecting villages against supernatural invaders. The producer of the show called my role, the "Basil Exposition" of the show, since Hozaburo does explain a lot in each episode.
"Gurren Lagann" is coming out very soon in a subtitled only DVD, with the dub version coming at year's end or early 2009. "Ghost Slayers Ayashi" will have a regular and deluxe version with sub and dub. |

insurrected i just watched star trek: insurrection for the first time. believe or not, i never saw it before. it's very nearly ten years old. it wasn't that good. it starts out OK but it gets pretty hackneyed as it wears on, becoming kind of irritating by the end. i'll always remember that i asked dravenfrost and valerieloveland what they thought of it, at the time, and i was told it was on par with an average episode of the show. that's on the money. i'm on a mini star trek kick thanks to tivo. TNG and DS9. i haven't been tivoing voyager or enterprise. voyager is more likely if i get desparate. enterprise fucking sucked as far as i ever watched it. there were like, no redeeming qualities i can recall at all, besides t'pol being hot, and i don't really care about that very much. i've also been reading up on crap on the memory alpha wiki. kind of like wikipedia, you can kind of get lost. unlike the real wikipedia, you're just learning about star trek, so it's even more useless than usual. i'm going to watch nemesis next. can't wait to see how much that sucks. |

going through a box i just finished going through a box of old documents, many of which i shredded.
inside the box, though, i found something that i thought was somewhere in storage in PA but has been with me in CA since 2000 (whoops.) it's a stack of obi from games and CDs i bought during the '90s and into 2000. for some reason, i used to separate out the spine cards and keep them in a stack in my drawer.
don't ask me why.
anyway, the real reason i wanted it is because i knew it had the obi for my copy of psychic assassin taromaru for saturn in it. i have the game, i have the obi, and i have the unused memory card sticker. i think this is worth like $300 - $400.
now what? hmmm. |

AX stuff hello Our Persona 3 doujin is done and we'll be getting 200 copies of it tomorrow. Here is the cover that I did: So yes, $10 each at Anime Expo's artist alley, table B18 under the name Mecha Fetus. Buy it! I'm not going to be there-- Persona, Paul, and Ouendan will be selling it. I'll be working at Gnome International's booth in the exhibit hall again. The AX website still hasn't posted a map of the exhibit hall so I have no idea where my booth is. AX is certainly organized. |

boing http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/jun/30/anglicanism.religionwhat really i find amazing in this is that people want to revert to working with documents that are from 1662. how can you possibly live your life in 2008 governed by documents written in 1662? it just blows my mind, utterly. that is my actual sticking point with this stuff, rather than the substance of the argument. |

yargh apparently too human really is north america's answer to .hack. in every sense of that phrase. in other words, kohler wrote up a "denis let me play too human first because i like him and it's not actually that good actually" not-a-review. crikey. |

pride 2, me 0 i didn't end up going to pride this year (last year i went to a brunch but not to the event.) this is because i helped bill move. i was too busy helping bill move to actually worry about the fact that i was missing pride, and as i said to franken_bear today afterward, i think they'll probably have another one. dunno. i definitely do want to go and i am kind of sad to miss it. i think there's something larger to be plugged into and a potential to get something out of that. i am not a group-joiner by nature, to say the least, so this is uncharacteristic. but at the same time, i think helping out someone you care about with a difficult situation takes precedence over most things. dunno. last night after we got done with the packing we felt like doing, bill and i went to see kung fu panda. actually, we went to see wanted, but wanted was sold out, so we saw KFP instead. good flick, though i don't know that i'd buy it on blu-ray or anything. maybe it'd be something to throw in every now and again to kill time or as background noise. not that i really tend to do much of either... it's worth seeing, though. probably better than wanted, really, which is one of those movies that had a very short expiration date in my interest level. it has elapsed. after hanging out this evening, bill, bear_with_me, sftekbear, and i went to walzwerk. i need to go to german restaurants more often. i had the jäger schnitzel, which was covered in mushroom gravy and served with a giant pile of spätzle. i was extremely pleased. to think i've been driving by this place for the past four years without a clue it was there saddens me, but that's what living in a city is like. and getting to go to great random restaurants like this is also what living in a city is like. yay. tomorrow should be interesting: ray is back, with his fiance, noot. if you don't know what i'm talking about, uh, you'll learn over the next while, i'd imagine, as i'm expecting this new arrangement to be interesting, and interesting situations make for great blogfodder. i am hell of tired and why i was not in bed an hour ago is utterly beyond me. i'm a fool. |

diggin up blue things http://www.gamespot.com/features/6076983/index.htmli figure i might as well link this. it's the "history of mega man" which i wrote in 1999 for gamespot (then videogames.com). it's hard to imagine a site doing such a basic feature like this in 2008, isn't it? it was later updated by justin speer (and in all honesty i also had him correct an error i made during the original writing, so i have to thank him for that.) the bits about mega man zero and mega man battle network are (obviously) not mine. anything that came out after 2000 could not possibly be me. anyway, given today's news, it's worth tossing out there. yeeeeeh. |

holy fuck rockman 9 http://blue-bomber.jvmwriter.org/community/index.php?showtopic=1505&st=0entry29160hrm. i never played any of the zero games beyond some of the first one, which i don't really recall, although i owned the first three for a certain period in time (i eventually got rid of them.) i have also played neither of the ZX games, despite owning the first one. i'm a real portable action slacker, basically. anyway, according to that forum post inti creates people are MMX-tastic, which is good news if you ask me, but at the same time, stuff i've read about zero/ZX has been kind of fishy. i trust parish on these, though iirc he thought ZX2 was a big improvement. ... ROCKMAN 9 ROCKMAN 9 ROCKMAN 9 ROCKMAN 9 ROCKMAN 9 ROCKMAN 9 ROCKMAN 9 ROCKMAN 9 ROCKMAN 9 ROCKMAN 9 ROCKMAN 9 ROCKMAN 9 ... edit: better scans: http://www.rockmanpm.com/?p=game/similarity/megamariit's NES style. i dunno what to say to that. that's just odd. i mean, it's not exactly like NES (or, hell, SNES) was the pinnacle of 2D graphics and gameplay. i mean, i guess it's better than no new rockman and it'll have newer design elements, but... it's just weird. |

collectin' inspired by two things -- dcharlie's insan-o fucking 360 collection and a 1999 photo of my DVD collection that makes me nostalgic for when that medium was first getting off the ground, i decided to take pics of my current 360/PS3/wii and blu-ray collections. just because. the more purchase-happy members of the crowd will be shocked by my lack of massive collections, no doubt. this is what it's like these days, i'm afraid. http://flickr.com/photos/ferricide/2612786728/ http://flickr.com/photos/ferricide/2611953641/links below because there are some notes to check out (i.e. what the japanese games are for those who can't read the language). missing are crackdown (360), ninja gaiden II (360), king kong (360), and no more heroes (wii) because they're a. lost, b. not sitting in that pile, c. lent to brett, and d. lent to bill, presently, in that order. i suppose i can't consider myself to actually own crackdown anymore because i have no clue where it is or who might have it. the same as i can't figure out what happened to my copy of millennium actress -- my only hope there is that it might be anna who has it. so there you go. or i go. it's fun! |

old news, but i had no idea my devil may cry 4 review from OXM was online. i wonder if my other recent-ish OXM reviews are online (DMC4 was the last one i did; i haven't been offered an assignment since after the fall crush.) after a discussion yesterday with ted, i had a vague interest in seeing, now that the chips have fallen, how far down my 7.5 was in the metacritic rankings for the title, which is pretty toward the bottom, actually. shrug. |

mermy so i finished watching the mermaid forest TV show. there's really nothing to say. it's C+ level at best in terms of production quality and skill of adaptation, but it gets the point across without major damage. the adaptation of mermaid's scar added very little to the story, and i didn't like the character design for masato at all. the OAV is very superior, and unlike mermaid forest, there was very little effort paid to adding details the OAV missed. the entire series is workmanlike in general. today, i received the fourth volume of the mermaid saga manga from amazon, which i ordered after someone posted a helpful user review -- that's all i needed to complete the collection. the contrast between the old-format classic viz books, which went as high as $17.95, and the contemporary $9.95 unflipped one is both large and kind of amusing -- a reminder of what things used to be like and very much aren't any longer. the old "mermaid's scar" book comprises volumes 2 and 3 of the current collection (and the japanese tankobon as well) so there's no wasted money or space, either. most amusingly, the old mermaid forest volume -- first printing, november 1994 -- doesn't even have a UPC or any sell text on the back. what in the hell were they thinking? the manga market really was started by a bunch of well-meaning amateurs, i guess. i think i'm beyond the point where the "from the creator of inuyasha" sticker on volume 4 of mermaid saga can either irritate or amuse me. so that's most of my mermaid saga. i'm sure i'll post again whenever i end up reading the manga. |
